John W. C. Bird, Ph.D.

Professor II of Physiology

Intracellular Proteases and Lysosomal Diseases

Professor Bird is an internationally recognized expert in the biochemical and biomedical functions of mammalian lysosomal proteases. During his 37 years at Rutgers, Dr. Bird led an active research program on proteases and  lysosomal proteolysis that have taken him to laboratories throughout the world. His extensive collection of papers laid important groundwork in our understanding of protease activity in the process of skeletal muscle wasting diseases, such as muscular dystrophy. Dr. Bird is now retired and living with his wife, Evie in Corpus Christi, Texas.
