Kathleen Valverde MS, CGC, will present a seminar on The Genetic Counseling Profession
Monday, October 24, 2011, 12:00pm
(12pm LSB Auditorium) Kathleen Valverde MS, CGC; Director, Genetic Counseling Program, Arcadia University, Glenside, PA

This year marked the 40# anniversary of the first graduating class from Sarah Lawrence College's Masters in Human Genetics program. Presently there are 33 genetic counseling master's programs in North American. This talk will provide a historical overview of the genetic counseling field including a discussion of how the role of the genetic counselor has changed over time. While the majority of genetic counselors still work in clinical settings a growing number are employed by diagnostic laboratories, health departments, pharmaceutical companies and research institutions. The establishment of state licensure in 13 states and the continued efforts to obtain better reimbursement for services will enhance this field and the opportunities for future genetic counselors.
