From Newark Airport

From Newark Airport you can:

  • take a bus and a train  
  • take a taxi (about $50.00 with double tolls and tip)
  • take a shuttle service:
    • State Shuttle to Nelson Biological Laboratories or to any local hotel (about 60-75 minutes depending on other stops, $35.00 plus tip)
    • Princeton Airporter (about 30 minutes to the Hilton Hotel in East Brunswick, then a taxi ride, $16.00 plus tip plus about $10.00 for a taxi from the Hilton)
  • rent a car.

From Newark Airport by train

The monorail, now called AirTrain, connects with  Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station.  At the airport train station it is possible to connect with NJ TRANSIT® or Amtrak® trains.

If you choose to use NJ TRANSIT, connect with trains that run on the Northeast Corridor.  If you choose to use Amtrak, connect with trains that run on the Northeast Corridor Line. The cost for a one way ticket on NJ TRANSIT® to New Brunswick is about $12.00.
 


From Newark Airport by taxi

Taxi stands are located on the baggage claim level at Terminals A, B and C, between Doors 4 and 5.  Flat rates apply to all destinations.  During peak hours, stands are attended by taxi dispatchers to assist patrons. The taxi dispatcher at the curb will write the basic fare on a card (typically $50.00 or a bit more to Piscataway).  Tolls come to about $3.00.  There is a $1.00 charge for each piece of luggage more than 24 inches.  With a tip, expect to pay about $60.00.  The cost is the same for one to three passengers.

The taxi driver is unlikely to know how to reach Nelson Biological  Laboratories or the Life Sciences Building  You will need to have with you the directions from the New Jersey Turnpike.


From Newark Airport by State Shuttle

State Shuttle is a shared ride shuttle service to the Piscataway area. It will drop you at Nelson Biological Laboratories, the Life Sciences Building or at a local hotel.

Reservations must be made 24 hours in advance. The telephone numbers are (800) 427-3207 and (201) 729-0030.  More information can be obtained here

At the airport, call the (800) number to rendezvous with the driver. Bring the directions from the New Jersey Turnpike to show to the driver.


From Newark Airport by Princeton Airporter bus

For the Princeton Airporter shuttle, follow the signs from the baggage claim area to Ground Transport, then to "Shared Limo Services." Advanced reservations are recommended.   The telephone number of Princeton Airporter is (609) 587-6600 (1-800-468-6696 within New Jersey).  The cost (one way) is $24.00.

The Princeton Airporter shuttle will drop you at the Brunswick Hilton Hotel on route 18 in East Brunswick. You will need to take a taxi from the hotel to the Nelson Biological Laboratories or the Life Sciences Building.  The New Jersey Turnpike directions below give directions from route 18, if the taxi driver does not know the way.

From Newark Airport by car

Exit the Airport unto theUS-1/US-9 ramp toward
Newark-Elizabeth (US-22)/ NY via Skyway (RT-21)

Merge onto US-1 & 9 Express Lane South and take the ramp towards NJ Turnpike (I-95)/Dowd Ave/North Ave/Elizabeth Seaport. Merge onto NJ-81 South. 

Take the I-95 South/Turnpike South ramp. Merge onto New Jersey Turnpike Cars Only Lane
Take Exit 9 (Rt-18 exit) towards New
Brunswick (US-1).
Now take directions from the New Jersey Turnpike


From JFK Airport

To reach Nelson Biological Laboratories from JFK (Kennedy) Airport, about 15 miles east of Manhattan, you can:

  • take the Princeton Airporter shuttle ($47) to the Hilton Hotel in East Brunswick, then a taxi (about $10) to Nelson Laboratories
  • take a taxi, bus or subway to Manhattan, then take a train or bus to New Brunswick (See From New York City by train or bus.)
  • take a limousine.  Piscataway is served by both Ace Luxury car service (1-800-660-9766) and Boston Coach. (1-800-672-7676).  The cost is $140.00 or more.  Reservations are required.
(Since Newark Airport is considerably closer to Rutgers than JFK, fly to Newark if practical.)


From JFK Airport by Car

(The total distance is about 53 miles.  With good traffic this can be done in about 75 minutes.  During rush hour this could take several hours.  If you have a choice of airports, fly into Newark International (EWR).

Exit airport on to Van Wyck Expressway.  Take exit number 1B-2, towards Belt Pkwy West/Verrazano Br/Rockaway Blvd

Merge onto N. Conduit Ave. Then turn slight left to take the Belt Pkwy West ramp towards the Belt Pkwy West. Merge onto the Belt Pkwy West.

In about 3 miles the Belt Pkwy West becomes the POW/MIA Memorial Hwy.  Stay on this about 13 miles.

Take the I-278/Verrazano  Narrows Bridge exit (EXIT # 3) towards Staten Island/New Jersey.
Merge onto I-278 W. Stay on I-278 West about 12 miles until it intersects with I-95/NJ Turnpike.  (note: I 278 changes name several times in this distance - I-278/POW MIA Memorial Hwy/Staten Island Expressway/I-278.) 

Merge onto I-95 S/New Jersey Turnpike (Toll road).  Stay on this about 15 miles until you reach Exit 9/Route 18. Exit towards New Brunswick(US-1)/Shore Resorts. 

Now use the directions from the New Jersey Turnpike

(Total Distance is about 55 miles. This should take about 80 minutes). 


From JFK Airport by Princeton Airporter bus

These buses run roughly every hour during the day. You can get information at the ground transportation desk in the baggage claims area, or by calling 1-609-587-6600.


From JFK Airport to Manhattan by taxi

Taxis can be picked up outside any terminal.  The fare will be the charge on the meter plus tolls, tip and any surcharges.  The basic toll is about $45.00.  


From JFK Airport to Manhattan by bus

Go to the ground transportation desk outside of  the baggage claim area for information. 

New York Airport Service provides shuttle buses between New York's JFK Airport and Manhattan.  The shuttle stops at Grand Central Station, Penn Station, the Port Authority Bus Terminal  and major hotels nearby.  You will want to go to either Penn Station or the Port Authority.  Buses run about every 15-30 minutes from 6am - midnight.  Cost is $13.00.  Gray Line's  (212-315-3006)  Shared Mini-Bus service goes to anywhere between Battery Park and 125th Street.  Cost is $16.50. SuperShuttle's Shared door to door service (1-800-258-3826) is available on demand 24 hours a day.  Cost is $13.50 - $14.50.  (Costs are as of 2000).


From JFK Airport to Manhattan by AirTrain and Subway

Take the AirTrain ($7.00) to the Howard Beach Station.  Connect to the "A" subway train.  There take the "A" subway train to Manhattan ($2.00).  Get off at 34th Street for Penn Station (train) or 42nd Street for the Port Authority Bus Station.


From New York City by train or bus

The cheapest alternative is the bus to New Brunswick then the campus bus to the Nelson Biological Labs Building (about 90 minutes total).  The fastest alternative is the train to New Brunswick then taxi to Nelson Labs ($7.00 train + $10.00 taxi, about 70 minutes total).


From New York City by train

Trains leave frequently  from Pennsylvania Railroad Station (at 33rd Street and 8th Avenue) (NJ Transit 800-772-2222, 201-762-5100).  In the early morning or late at night, the trains might run once per hour.  Train schedules.  One-way fare to New Brunswick is about $12.00.   

The fastest route is to leave the train at New Brunswick then take a taxi to Nelson Labs ($12.00 train + $10.00 taxi, about 70 minutes total).  The cheapest route is to leave the train at New Brunswick, then take a campus bus to Nelson Labs (free, about 80 minutes total). The campus bus station is a three block walk from the train station.


From New York City by bus

Buses to New Brunswick leave frequently (every half hour at worst, at the hour and the half hour) from the Port Authority Bus Terminal (at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue) (Suburban Transit, 800-222-0492, 212-563-7043).

Get off the bus at the New Brunswick train station (about 70 minutes from NYC).  Then take a campus bus or a taxi to Nelson Labs.  A taxi will cost about $10.00 and take about 10 minutes.  The campus bus is free, but requires a three-block walk and takes a total of about 30 minutes.


From the New Brunswick train station by campus bus

From the train station/bus stop in central New Brunswick, the campus bus can be reached by walking under the train overpass onto Easton Avenue, one block uphill to Somerset Street where you turn right, walk half a block, turn left on College Avenue, walk just over one block to the bus stop across College Avenue from Scott Hall. Take the A or H bus to Nelson Labs.  It is suggested that you get off at the Allison Road Classroom Building stop on Allison Road.  Walk on the sidewalk/service road between the Allison Road Classroom Building and Nelson Labs.  The RUCDR Annex will be on your right.  Walk through the Fairbrothers Arboretum and enter the back door of the lobby of the Nelson Biological Laboratories Building.

For the Life Sciences Building ("LSB"), walk North East on the sidewalk to the intersection of Allison and Bevier Roads.  Nelson Labs will be on your left and the Life Sciences Building will be on your right.  Turn right and cross Allison Road.  Enter the LSB from the Bevier Road main entrance.


From the New Brunswick train station by taxi

There are always taxis waiting outside the train station when trains arrive.  If the taxi driver does not know the way to Nelson Labs, 604 Allison Road, Busch Campus, Piscataway, or the Life Sciences Building at 145 Bevier Road, use the following directions:  

Start out going Southwest on Albany Street towards Easton Avenue by
turning right. Turn RIGHT onto Easton Avenue.

Next turn right on to Hamilton Street.  In about 0.5 miles turn left on to George Street.  Take the Route 18 North ramp (slight right) and Merge on to ROUTE 18 NORTH. 

Cross the John Lynch Bridge over the Raritan River. 

Take the Busch Campus (Campus Road Exit)  --  First exit after the bridge.

After 0.5 miles you will reach a traffic circle, enter the circle and make the second right (when you are about to enter the circle this road would be straight ahead of you), after another 0.5 miles you will pass a bus stop and you will come to an intersection.  The Serin Physics Labs will be on your right, and the University Golf Course will be on your left.  Turn right on to Allison Road.  Proceed to the end of Allison Road (about 0.2 miles). 

For the Nelson Bio Labs Building, turn left on to Bevier Road.  Have the driver drop you off at the lobby entrance between parking lots 55 and 56.

For the LSB, turn right on Bevier Road.  Take an immediate right into the parking lot/entrance for the LSB (Parking Lot 57B).


From Philadelphia by train

Take a SEPTA train to Trenton, connecting with a NJ Transit train to New Brunswick or Edison.  From New Brunswick, take a campus bus or a taxi. Alternatively, you may take an AMTRAK train to New Brunswick or Metropark


From the New Jersey Turnpike and from route 18 northbound

Leave the Turnpike at Exit 9 and take Route 18 Northbound (after the Turnpike toll booths, keep to the right and merge on to Route 18 Northbound).

Go 4.0 miles, passing over US Route 1, through two traffic lights and over the Raritan River.  IGNORE the exit for George Street/Rutgers University.  DO NOT exit before crossing the river.

Take the Busch Campus (Campus Road Exit)  --  First exit after the bridge.

After 0.5 miles you will reach a traffic circle, enter the circle and make the second right ( when you are about to enter the circle this road would be straight ahead of you), after another 0.5 miles you will pass a bus stop and then come  to an intersection.   Serin Physics Laboratory  will be on your right and the University Golf Course will be on your left.  Turn right on to Allison Road.  Proceed to the end of Allison Road (about .2 miles).  Turn right on to Bevier Road.  After about 0.1 miles turn left on to Taylor Road.  Park in lot 54 (left turn off Taylor Road).  Tell the guard you are visiting the Department of Genetics.   The guard will give you a one-day parking permit for your rear-view mirror.  We can mail one to you, in advance,  if you wish.  

From Lot 54 walk back to Bevier Road.  Turn right and walk along Bevier Road. Cross Allison Road and continue straight ahead.  Enter Nelson Labs either between the B and D wings (sign over door says Brinkley and Adele Smithers Bldg.) or further on at the B main entrance (between Parking Lots 55 and 56).

From Route 287 - SouthBound

Leave 287 at Exit 9 South toward Highland Park. You will be on River Road. 

Pass through two traffic lights (Centennial Avenue and Plainfield Avenue).  Continue south on River Road for about 2 + miles.  At the traffic light, turn left on to Hoes Lane.

Travel along Hoes Lane for about  0.5 miles then take a slight right turn ahead on to Frelinghuysen Road.  Rutgers Golf Course should be on your right.  Immediately on your left will be the Waksman Institute where some members of the Department of Genetics have their laboratories.  After about 0.5 miles you will come to the intersection with Allison Road. (Psychology will be on your left, the Serin Physics lab will be on your left across the intersection and the golf course will be on your right.

 Turn right on to Allison Road.  Proceed to the end of Allison Road (about 0.2 miles).  Turn right on to Bevier Road.  After about 0.1 miles turn left on to Taylor Road.  Park in lot 54 (left turn off Taylor Road).  Tell the guard you are visiting the Department of Genetics.  The guard will give you a one-day parking permit for your rear-view mirror.  We can mail one to you, in advance,  if you wish.  

From Lot 54 walk back to Bevier Road.  Turn right and walk along Bevier Road.  Cross Allison Road and continue straight ahead.  Enter Nelson Labs either between the B and D wings (sign over door says Brinkley and Adele Smithers Bldg.) or further on at the B main entrance (between Parking Lots 55 and 56).

From Route 287 - North Bound

Take the  S. Randolphville Road exit, (Exit 7 -  Piscataway/Middlesex. Turn left onto S. Randolphville Rd.

Stay straight to go on to Behmer Rd.  At second intersection turn left on to Sidney Rd.

Turn left onto Hoes Lane.  In about 1.5 miles turn right on to Hoes Lane West. You will pass the UMDNJ Community Mental Health Center and Waksman Institute on your left.  At the intersection make a sharp left on to Frelinghuysen  Rd.

After about 0.5 miles you will come to the intersection with Allison Road. (Psychology will be on your left, the  Serin Physics lab will be on your left across the intersection and the golf course will be on your right.

Turn left on to Allison Road.   Proceed to the end of Allison Road (about 0.2 miles).  Turn right on to Bevier Road.  After about 0.1 miles turn left on to Taylor Road.  Park in lot 54 (left turn off Taylor Road).  Tell the guard you are visiting the Department of Genetics.   The guard will give you a one-day parking permit for your rear-view mirror.  We can mail one to you, in advance,  if you wish.

From Lot 54 walk back to Bevier Road.  Turn right and walk along Bevier Road. Cross Allison Road and continue straight ahead.  Enter Nelson Labs either between the B and D wings (sign over door says Brinkley and Adele Smithers Bldg.) or further on at the B main entrance (between Parking Lots 55 and 56).

From Princeton via route 27

The best route from Princeton is via Route 27.  An alternative is Route 1 from Princeton, which takes about the same amount of time.  Route 27 has more traffic lights while Route 1 has more large trucks.  Total travel time from Nassau Street to Nelson Labs is about 40-60 minutes depending on traffic and driving style.

Take Route 27 (Nassau Street) north from Princeton towards New Brunswick.  Turn left on Franklin Boulevard.  Before reaching Franklin Boulevard, you will pass an intersection (Veronica Avenue) with a Getty Gas station on the left, a "Super" A&P in a mall behind the gas station, and a closed Agway store just beyond the intersection.  Franklin Boulevard is the next traffic light after Veronica Avenue.

Follow Franklin Boulevard to the end. It bends to the right, goes straight for several miles, crosses Easton Avenue, crosses the Landing Lane bridge over the Raritan River and ends at River Road.

Turn left on River Road, then after about 100 meters, right on Sutphen Road. Sutphen Road is the first actual road to the right, but a large driveway precedes it.

Take the first left on to Frelinghuysen Road.

After another 0.5 miles you will pass a bus stop and then come  to an intersection.   Serin Physics Laboratory  will be on your right and the University Golf Course will be on your left.  Turn right on to Allison Road.  Proceed to the end of Allison Road (about 0.2 miles).  Turn right  on to Bevier Road.  After about 0.1 miles turn left on to Taylor Road.  Park in lot 54 (left turn off Taylor Road).  Tell the guard you are visiting the Department of Genetics.   The guard will give you a one-day parking permit for your rear-view mirror.  We can mail one to you, in advance,  if you wish.

From Lot 54 walk back to Bevier Road.  Turn right and walk along Bevier Road. Cross Allison Road and continue straight ahead.  Enter Nelson Labs either between the B and D wings (sign over door says Brinkley and Adele Smithers Bldg.) or further on at the B main entrance (between Parking Lots 55 and 56).

From Princeton via Route 1

Get to Route 1 North from Princeton.  There are several possible routes to do this from Nassau Street such as Washington Avenue.   Take Route 1 northbound from Princeton. From Route 1, exit on to Route 18 Northbound (exit right from Route 1)   immediately after passing under a bridge.  Then continue as described in the directions from the New Jersey Turnpike above


Metropark

Amtrak has limited service to New Brunswick.  Metropark has frequent trains including the Metroliners.  Take Amtrak  to the Metropark Train station (Iselin, NJ). Taxis are available at the station, or phone Checker Cab (732-634-8300).  Approximate fare to Nelson Labs  is $25.00. 


Parking

Parking is very limited and controlled at Rutgers.  For the Life Sciences Building (LSB) you should Park in lot 54 (left turn off Taylor Road).  Tell the guard you are visiting the Department of Genetics.   The guard will give you a one-day parking permit for your rear-view mirror.  We can mail one to you, in advance,  if you wish.

From Lot 54 walk back to Bevier Road.  Turn right and walk along Bevier Road.  Cross Allison Road and continue straight ahead. 

Enter the LSB through the Bevier Road entrance.  The Departmental offices are immediately on your right.

Enter Nelson Labs either between the B and D wings (sign over door says Brinkley and Adele Smithers Bldg.) or further on at the B main entrance (between Parking Lots 55 and 56).

57B = from Allison Rd. make right on Bevier Rd.; lot is in front of Life Sciences Building ("LSB")

51A = from Allison Rd. make right on Bevier Rd. and then a left on Taylor Rd.; lot is on the left

54A = from Allison Rd. make a right on Bevier Rd. and then a left on Titsworth Place; lot is on the left

Parking Can be found in the following common lots near Nelson Labs.

56 = from Allison Rd. make a left on Bevier, first parking lot on left.  Lot is in front of Nelson Labs.

58 = from Allison Rd. make a left on Bevier, third parking lot on left.  Lot is in front of the Library of Science and Medicine (only lot with parking meters for visitors).

58A = from Allison Rd. make a left on Bevier, fourth parking lot on left.
