Windows 98/ME Configuration Note: Before a computer can connect to the DLS Wireless Network, you must have a properly installed 802.11b/g wireless network adapter. Any card bearing the Wi-Fi logo should work perfectly.. The installation of the adapter will differ from manufacturer and is beyond the scope of this document. Following any instructions provided with the adapter is recommended.
Unfortunately due to the age of Windows 98 and ME, there are very few built in features to connect to a wireless network. We recommend using any software provided by the wireless card's manufacturer. The default settings for the DLS-WNS are as follows
1. At this point, we will assume your wireless network is working properly, and you should be connected to the DLS-WNS, In Windows 98, the software required for a VPN was provided, but usually not installed by default. You should check your computer to ensure everything is installed and available. You may need a Windows 98 CD to complete this as well, so you should secure one before starting.
2. To ensure that the VPN software is installed, open Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs.
3. Select the upper tab labeled Windows Setup to proceed.
4. Highlight Communications, and click on Details.
5. Near the bottom should be an option for Virtual Private Networking. Ensure that the box to the left of it is checked, then click Ok. The computer may prompt you to insert your Windows 98 or Windows ME CD.
6. If required to insert CD do not click cancel. After the installation is complete, you may be prompted to restart.
7. Open the control panel and select Dial-Up Networking. Then click Make New Connection.
8. For the name, we recommend using DLS-Wireless. Also, be sure to select Microsoft VPN Adapter from the device list.
9. Enter the host name of dlswns or IP address of 192.168.0.1
10. When you are returned to the list of Dial-Up connections, right click on DLS-Wireless and select Properties.
11. Select the tab Server Types and ensure that the boxes for Require encrypted password, Require data encryption are checked, and that NetBEUI, IPX/SPX Compatible are unchecked. It should look like this when you are done.
12. Finally, back in the Dial-UP Networking window, right click DLS-Wireless once more and select Create Shortcut.
13. Click Yes to save it to the Desktop..
14. Look for and double click a new icon labeled DLS-Wireless on your desktop. This is the typical dialog box which you should see when you wish to use the DLS Wireless system. For DLS users your username is typically your last name. Click Connect to proceed.
15. You should see the next few windows in succession, while it authenticates your connection. Following these, it will minimize to a small network icon on the lower right in the system tray, near the first network icon.
16. At this point you are connected and should be able to browse the web. Additionally, the next time you wish to connect to the DLS-WNS, you only need to click on the DLS-Wireless icon located on your desktop.
