The Genus Peranema Dujardin 1841

Diagnosis:

Colorless, phagotrophic cells. Two flagella present both emergent from the canal. Anterior flagellum is longer and thicker than the recurrent flagellum and is directed forward while swimming. Beating often occurs only at the tip. A second thinner flagellum extends posteriorly, but is closely appressed to the body and often overlooked. A prominent feeding apparatus, composed of two rods, is located at the anterior of the cell adjacent to the reservoir.
