Farmer, M. A. and Triemer, R. E. 1988. A Redescription of the
Genus Ploeotia Duj. (EUGLENOPHYCEAE). Taxon. 37(2):319-325.
Diagnosis:
Cells colorless, rigid, slightly flattened dorsiventrally,
creeping along the substrate. Pellicle with prominent ridges (usually
10) that are unevenly bifurcate on their outermost edges. Flagella
2, unequal, subapically inserted, heterodynamic, the shorter one directed
anteriorly during swimming, the longer, thicker one trailing posteriorly.
Cells moving with a creeping motion. Feeding apparatus present, composed
of two supporting rods and separate vanes that form a partial rosette when
viewed in transverse section. Feeding apparatus extending three quarters
the length of the cell, tapering posteriorly, and anteriorly incorporated
into the ventral ridge of the pellicle. Feeding apparatus remaining
independent of the canal and reservoir, not forming a protrusible siphon.
